I have a huge Sports Illustrated/sports magazine collection. Interestingly, I know the son of the umpire on the 1st Sports illustrated from August 16, 1954 who is an accomplished artist himself and reveres Bernie. I'm pretty sure Bernie only did 10 SI covers, but if I'm wrong, please let me know.
Woooow where in Italy?! 🤩
Timmy here. I'm halfway through applying for citizenship in Italy. My final review is this October. My family is from Tortorici Sicily.
Wooooo amazing! Never been in Sicily 🫣 I’m from North
Magical works!
So great! I’d love to hear Bob’s sons talk about their dad’s work.
I have seen many of these pictures but had no idea who made them. They are fantastic! and it's nice to have someone new to discover. Thank you for this video.
Thank you so much for giving it a watch and learning about a new artist!
Love your work!art creations❤❤❤
Thank you for explaining the thinking, back story, techniques, sizes, and medium used in your fathers beautiful work. His later non illustration more abstract figurative fine art work is really amazing.
Thank John this was awesome!!! Hope you can get one of his sons to go over his work like you did with Robert Hiendel. That was an awesome video also like the one you did with your father. Great artists, great stuff!!!👍👏👏👏
I was a student at his illustration academy near Kansas City in the early 90s. It was such a great experience. I still have the illustration I did in his class that he helped me complete. It had an awkwardness that he fixed with just a few marks. His demonstrations were just great. I left that class feeling inspired..
these paintings are just amazing...huge English fan since my high school and art school days.. Super talent..
I posted this same comment on your recent video about Bernie Fuchs, but it’s more appropriate to post it here. I have been a fan of your father’s work since I was in high school in the late 1970s. I pursued a degree in ‘advertising design’, i.e. illustration, and followed his work closely as well as the work of Bernie Fuchs, Fred Otnes, Allan Cober, Bob Peak, and Bob Heidel. I couldn’t believe my good fortune when in the fall of 1980 the scaled-down Illustrators Seminar came to the campus of TCU in Ft. Worth, Texas. I drove up from Houston and got to meet your father and all but one of those great artists. Bob Peak was on an assignment and couldn’t attend. I even brought with me the Illustrators Seminar’s poster (it doubled as an enrollment form) and each of the illustrators autographed their photo for me!! I still have that poster. My best to your father! He remains an inspiration to me.
Fantastic video about Bernie Fuchs! In addition to adoring Bernie’s work, I have been a fan of your father’s work since I was in high school in the late 1970s. I pursued a degree in ‘advertising design’, i.e. illustration, and followed his work closely as well as the work of Bernie Fuchs, Fred Otnes, Allan Cober, Bob Peak, and Bob Heidel. I even brought the Illustrators Seminar’s poster (it doubled as an enrollment form) and each of the illustrators autographed their photo for me!! I still have that poster. He remains an inspiration to me. A few years ago I decided I would make a pilgrimage to Westport to cast my gaze on Bernie Fuch’s studio. Sadly, it had just been sold and bulldozed. I thought it should have been designated a National Landmark. So much history passed through that place.
I love this! I met Mark English in the fall of 1980 at the Illustrators Seminar, a downsized version of their Illustrators Workshop, held on the campus of TCU in Ft. Worth, Texas. It was fantastic to speak to Mark and the other great illustrators who were part of the touring group; Bernie Fuchs, Fred Otnes, Allen Cober, and Bob Heindel. Only the great Bob Peak was missing that week, he was busy on an assignment. I was just out of college at the time and Mark English and the rest of these men had been my artistic heroes. All of them have since been inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in New York. Great creative minds!
He was inking not drawing. Video title is misleading.
Any chance of loading the 2nd part please, thanks!
Thank you so much for this. Much appreciated.
I'd hear " oh your a commercial artist". I'd think " you dont know anything! Try it sometimes. Create with a short deadline, & make it good. Commercial, fine art..same same. Commercial has less emphasis on longevity, durability. Besides that, there's no difference. Friday at quitting time you get a call, " I need a piece by Monday noon, can you do it?....yes! But it'll cost a bit more.
mark english’s sense of design just kills me. been a huge fan since i was in art school in the 80s.
same.
HE WENT TO THE ART CENTER SCHOOL LOS ANGELES. ART CENTER COLLEGE OF DESIGN WAS CREATED AROUND 1970 AFTER I GRADUATED 1969. ART CENTER. THEN MOVED TO PASEDENA AND RENAMED AND EXPANDED .
Mark, you have always been a painter...have followed you since the 60s...
FINE BODY OF WORK, THANKS.
real artist for a change
I first saw Mark English's work in the mid-60s when I was a teen and dreaming of becoming an illustrator. Always loved his work.
Blurry unfinished look about it.
Brilliant!
As an artist, this is the most exciting work that I've ever seen. Truly. Mark's work fires something in my soul.
I had the pleasure of attending an illustrators workshop in 1982. Mark English was one of the speakers. He was, and is, one of my heroes.
I was there in 1978 and it was life changing.
I like about 15% of his work, which makes him one of my favorites.
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark English was one of my favorite illustrator/Artists with a prolific career and body of works. Quite inspirational to me, throughout a most formative time in my developing creative/artistic life, I often sought out his many layered images being used in practically ever magazine and publication across the board. Often haunting, always Poetic, their nuances dreamlike and yet familiar, I was always thankful to glimpse each one.
I’ll never stop making art that I love in the same way that I’ll never stop visiting Saturn on weekends.
Most artist's are voices that produce works that speak to people directly... about who they are and the world they live in. Then there're 'artisans' that produce pure decoration. There is a fundamental difference between the two. Modern people love decoration and despise societal commentary. That's why there're so few 'artists'.
Great interview. Thanks!
Thanks for this. I love English's work.
This is fantastic and inspiring, thank you for sharing your process, John!
This is fantastic and inspiring, thank you for sharing your process, John!
Well I'm stunned nice work🎉🎉
Great talk! I've been a fan of C.F. Payne for years but never really knew any of his backstory so this was very informative. Hadn't heard of some of those other illustrators names for years. Thanks!
I just pinned one of his works for a friend redoing her dining room. I said make a masterpiece like this be the focal point. Let every other decision come after. He's the greatest. ❤
Good advice :)
Thank you for this wonderful video and sharing about your father. Drawing skills were an important part of the curriculum for advertising Design students at Art Center. I was an advertising illustration major and graduated in 1979. This program harkens back to the day when advertising art directors mocked up the entire ad and relied on their own illustration skills. Your father was my hero and a huge influence on me. This presentation is one of the best things I’ve ever watched. I learned so much watching this. I’m going to share it with my friend who was an illustration major at Art Center and a professional illustrator. He will love it.
Absolutely stunning! To have come across this tonight has been a revelation and an inspiration. Thanks!
That is so nice to hear. Glad you found something for yourself in it.
Fantastic art. I was born with the same surname. I have also painted since I was small, but nowhere near your standard. Wonder if we’re related.
One of my all-time heroes. Artcenter had one of his originals hanging in an office. I wanted to study it as close as possible.
Thank you for sharing.
I went to one of his workshops with the other well know illustrators in the late 80's. His illustrations were great but I think his more recent fine art is even better.
It's amazing how an artist can evolve!
5:50. Music Philip Glass
Amazing artist and wonderful teacher. Extremely kind man. What an inspiration.
Always good to hear from you. Thanks for watching.
Illustrators are artists. Art aficionados need to get over it. But visual arts can be viewed on a bell curve from hyper-realistic to totally abstract. The best art in my humble opinion is in the 1-2 sigma range. Hyper-realists are just copy machines. Rothko's work is, of course, art, but low-value, again in my humble opinion. I suspect Mr. English was pushed to the abstract end of the spectrum for commercial and reputational reasons. But his work is nonetheless wonderful. (Let's not get into what is Good art and Bad art...) Incidentally, I don't respond to comments. I don't even read them. I really don't care what you think.
Aside from photorealistic art,all representational art is,in some way abstract. Art that we generally call abstract is non-representational art.
But you want us to care what you think by posting a comment ?
Thank you
Usually I am anti-tech but the sharing of artists works is so enlightening. Thank you all!
Glad we could bridge that gap for you!
@@VisualArtsPassage I tend to be exasperated by my lack of familiarity and proficiency with technology as well but am often happily surprised by an offering such as this. Thank 🌉 You !
Of my favorite 100 Artists/Illustrators, Mark English is high on that list. IMO English was/is the Picasso of Illustration in that he reinvented his work/art.
We couldn't agree more. He was a giant and we miss him tremendously.
